The Imperial Starfighter Corps

Imperial X-wing superiority snubfightersPrevious to the reign of Emperor Roma, there was no Starfighter Corps as it is known today. All starfighter assets were attached to the Navy. With the many changes of doctrine that Roma's reign brought, the Starfighter Corps came into existance. A primary factor in the separation of the fighter wings from the Navy was the addition of Naval starfighter assets to the Army during surface campaigns.

With flight officers being forced to report to different commanders in different branches from campaign to campaign, logic dictated the formation of a new service. Made up of the majority of starfighters and pilots in Imperial service, they were joined by specialist support staff, from grunt mechanics to engineers specializing in the newer models of TIEs. Most members of the Starfighter Corps have adopted a swagger completely unaffected by their tremendous turnover rate.

Even with the special courses offered at Caridia, the SFC still loses over two thirds of their pilots in their first engagement. Those that do survive, if they continue to survive, become the deadliest pilots in the Galaxy. Even with the high mortality rates, there are more applicants to the Academy than it can handle a year. The prestige associated with the Starfighter Corps is a lure that few youngsters can resist.
